Name cards remain an essential communication tool in this digital age of international exchanges, and networking.
Nowadays, many design and concept enhancing options are available for your name cards. So how to make your name card stand out and motivate consumers to keep it?
Without a name card, which provides your function and title, you will be discredited. A cheap name card is, therefore, to be analyzed from every angle according to the customs of each country. In every situation, it is advised to avoid thinking according to your personal habits and hence adapt to the professional needs of your interlocutor, so that you can provide him/her with a business card that will retain his attention and thus allow your client to remember you.
On the size of a business card
The standard size of a business card is 8.5 x 5.4cm. Some sites offer new shapes (larger, square…). However, it is important to remember that the standard layout is very essential to the success of your name, as it corresponds to the size of a bank card and will therefore be more suitable inserted into any wallet or cardholder. Too large of a business card will be folded, lost or discarded.
Horizontal or vertical?
As far as orientation is concerned, most of the daily used cards are of a landscape (horizontal) format, allowing it to retain a natural look. Choosing a landscape layout is especially beneficial if you are a business manager, an executive or a journalist… However, there is nothing holding you from testing vertical cards. The information must then be arranged in blocks, one on top of the other. This original side may be welcome if your company offers an atypical product or service.
The posterior side of a name card
Some cards feature content written on both the front and the rear sides. How would you know if this would suit you?
To get your answer, list the amount of information that will appear on your name card. In general, one front has enough space for information about you and your company. The back allows you to add another type of information, provided that its use, such as prices if you sell a particular product, the company’s activities if they are multiple, schedules if they are specific… Be however aware that customers sometimes use the rear side of the card to take some notes.
Finally, it is recommended to avoid placing the text too close to the edges of the card, a free margin highlights more elegance.
Legibility of the content
An acceptable level of content legibility can be reached by choosing a simple font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial…), while limiting the size of different text blocks to 2 sizes.
On the other hand, you can get crafty with the police size: Using a different size for 2 different text contents, will allow you to rank them, which greatly enhances the visual aspect and the sense of priority.
Gone are the days of black and white
If your company has a graphic charter, it is advisable to use it in order to maintain a certain level of visual consistency. Color usage must be in moderation. The background colour must be meaningful enough and reminiscent of your business sector (green for landscapers, grey for buildings, yellow for bakers, etc.). This helps in creating a pleasant atmosphere for your client.
The quality of materials used
Choosing quality paper is important, as it allows for a good image of your company.
Opt for a matte or glossy paper (often more expensive than a standard quality paper but is of a higher quality). The gloss finish of the name provides a high-end look.
Note that it is also possible to use “selective varnish” that is applicable only on certain elements of your card (image, logo, etc.).
The most recent websites can also offer you other materials (leather, rubber, etc.), in order to make your name card look original and creative.
